Venture Electronics VE Monk Plus & Monk Plus SPC review. Still the best budget earbuds in 2023.

What if I told you that you could buy a well sounding ear bud for 5 USD? Yes, you heard it right. The Venture Electronics VE Monk Plus has garnered a reputation in the audiophile community for its astounding price-to-performance ratio. In this review, I will discuss the Monk Plus and its SPC Edition counterpart. Both versions feature a 15.4mm dynamic driver and come with a non-detachable cable.

Model overview

The Monk Plus comes in two editions: the Standard and the SPC. The Standard edition, priced at $5, is shipped in a humble plastic bag and includes the earbuds along with four pairs of ear foams. It is available in both microphone and non-microphone versions, offering versatility to suit different user preferences.

The cable termination of the Standard edition is 3.5mm. On the other hand, the SPC edition, priced at $20, comes in a more sophisticated carton box. And includes the earbuds, the EX Pack Lite, which contains various ear foams, and a handy storage zipper case.

Similar to the Standard edition, the SPC is available in both microphone and non-microphone versions. But what sets it apart is the option to choose between 2.5mm, 3.5mm, or 4.4mm cable termination at no additional cost.

Technical specifications

The Venture Electronics Monk Plus boasts an impedance of 64Ω and a sensitivity of 118dB, making it efficient enough to be driven by a smartphone. However, it can still benefit from additional power for an enhanced listening experience.

Design & build

The Monk Plus earbuds sport a sleek design, constructed with black translucent plastic that allows a glimpse of the driver configuration inside. Vent holes at the base of the earbuds ensure proper ventilation for the drivers. The earbuds have a base diameter of 16mm, providing ample space for the 15.4mm dynamic driver to operate optimally.

The stems, also made of plastic, measure 20mm in length and feature a model name and channel indication on the outside. The SPC edition stands out with its transparent housings, giving users a visual treat of the internal components. Overall, the build quality of the Monk Plus is surprisingly robust, especially considering its price point.

Fit & comfort

Traditionally, I haven’t been a fan of earbuds due to their fit, seal, and lack of isolation. However, my experience with the Monk Plus proved to be pleasantly surprising. While they may not be my first choice for outdoor use due to minimal isolation, I found them to be comfortable for extended listening sessions at my desk.

The ear foams provided with the earbuds did not irritate my ears, adding to the overall comfort. I must caution against using the Monk Plus in noisy environments, as they lack the isolation to block out external sounds effectively.

Cable

Both editions of the Monk Plus come with non-detachable 1.2-meter cables. The SPC edition, however, comes with a stiffer cable, and users have the added benefit of choosing between 2.5mm, 3.5mm, or 4.4mm connectors. The cable’s microphonics are relatively low, and it features a plastic chin slider, though it is not as flexible as some other higher-priced cables.

VE Monk Plus Sound Overview

I must emphasize that all sound impressions in this review are subjective and based on personal experience. Despite the Monk Plus‘s impedance and sensitivity being adequate for smartphone use, it benefits from additional power for an optimal listening experience.

Earbuds are not typically known for their bass performance, but the Monk Plus surprises in this regard. With a few adjustments to the earbud placement in the ear, I found the bass to be well pronounced, warm, and detailed. While it may not offer significant sub-bass extension due to inherent limitations, the mid-bass weight and authority were impressive, delivering a pleasant experience for those who prefer a gentle bass response.

The midrange of the Monk Plus is one of its strong suits. It exhibits a natural and organic presentation, with no bass bleed into the mids, ensuring a clean and articulate sound. The midrange detail is excellent at this price point, with instruments showcasing natural timbre, and vocals taking the forefront with good body and definition. The upper mids are slightly more pronounced than the lower mids, lending additional energy to the overall midrange presentation.

The treble on the Monk Plus is lively, energetic, and detailed. It strikes a balance between sparkle and smoothness, avoiding any harshness or sibilance. The extended treble allows for impressive detail retrieval, a feature not commonly found in budget earbuds. The treble complements the overall tuning of the Monk Plus, enhancing the listening experience.

Conclusions

The Venture Electronics Monk Plus is an exceptional value for money in the audiophile world. It offers an impressive all-around performance, making it suitable for daily use or as a backup pair. The surprising bass performance, natural midrange, and lively treble combine to create an organic and slightly warm sound signature. As for drawbacks, it is challenging to find any real cons at this price point. If you are on a budget and looking for a stellar earbud, the Monk Plus is undoubtedly a worthy contender.
