Periodic Audio Magnesium (Mg) In-Ear Monitors review

Today we are looking at Periodic Audio Magnesium In-Ear Monitors. This sample was sent to me by Perioidic Audio in exchange for my honest review. I’m not paid to say anything in particular about this product and all thoughts and opinions in today’s episode are my own.

Peridic Audio Magnesium is a single dynamic driver IEM. And as you may guessed from it’s name it utilizes a high magnesium content alloy for the diaphragm material. The IEM currently retails for $99 (down from $199) and comes with a 5 years warranty in the United States and 2 years warranty in all other countries.

Magnesium comes in a quite original box. On the front, we have the illustration of IEM. On the back we do have specifications. When you open the front cover of the box there is a frequency response graph.

In the box:

  • Periodic Audio Magnesium IEMs
  • De-attachable cable
  • 3 pairs of single flange ear tips
  • 3 pairs of Dual flange ear tips
  • 3 pair of memory foam ear tips
  • Gold plated 3.5 to 6.3 adapter
  • Gold plated dual mono airplane adapter
  • Rubber ear guide hooks
  • and a wonderful protective travel case

Magnesium is a single dynamic driver IEM. The impedance is 32 Ohms, sensitivity 101 dB SPL at 1mW. One IEM weights 2.8 grams and the whole set with a cable weights 16.7g. Noise Reduction Rating is 31.3 db with foam ear tips and its impressive.

Design & build

Magnesium IEM is a bullet-shaped IEM and it definitely stands out in the oversaturated IEM market with their shape. The body of IEM is made of two plastic parts. One part carryies the nozze and the other part has a Periodic Audio logo and 2.5mm connector socket. By the way, this is a proprietary Perioid Audio connector that they developed for their IEMs. Transducer Diaphragm is 96% pure Magnesium foil. Overall Length is 21 mm, Body Diameter is 12 mm and Nozzle Diameter is 6 mm.

The fit of this IEM is great and finding a good seal was a breeze with the supplied ear tips. The comfort is good and I didn’t experience any problems with the fit. And i experienced no fatigue, or discomfort even during long listening sessions.

The cable is 1.2m long. From one side we have 3.5 mm connector and from another side we have a special 2.5mm connector called the IDEEEL connector that was developed by Periodic Audio. This connector is the world’s smallest 2.5mm connector measuring just 3.6mm across, and a tiny 9.5mm mounting depth.. This connector allows to use a very robust 2.5mm TS connectors in their IEMs. Overall the cable quality is good, it’s braided, it looks good, but has some microphonics.

Periodic Audio Magnesium sound overview

All the sound impressions that I’m sharing in my reviews are completely subjective. Please take them with a grain of salt.

The bass is where this IEM shines. It’s heavy, juicy, thick, and well controlled. Low frequencies are well tuned and mid-bass is more prominent than a sub bass, delivering a very nice punch and energy. At the same time the sub bass is well extended, it’s quite deep and brings a lot of note weight and control over low frequencies. The bass is also fast and quite detailed, but it’s north of neutral. Overall the bass is quite strong here, deliving a lot excitment and fun. In addition to that the low frequencies respond well to EQ and if needed you can add insane amounts of sub bass extension and mid bass punch.

Midrage is quite recessed and has a warm tonality, mostly because of mid bass bleed into lower mids. Depending on your preferences this can be an advantage or disadvantage for you. At the same time midrange has a good presence and vocals and instruments sound well. The timbre is natural and music sounds warm and relaxing.Upper mids are much cleaner, delivering good details and clarity, without harshness or fatigue. Details of midrange are good for this price point, but tonality might be too warm for some. Mid range also responds pretty well to EQ, so if you reduce some lower midrange you can get a more refined mid range sounds out of this pair.

The treble on MG is a bit recessed and sounds a bit veiled. But at the same time it has just enough of energy for my personal preference. The resolution of treble is quite good and in my case it was never sibiliant or fatiguing. The treble also has some sparkle and air, which further improves the details and presence, but on some tracks the treble sounds a bit thin. The treble also responds very well to EQ, so if you prefer a brighter sound signature, the driver has the capacity to bring some brightness, air, and details which results in a more open presentation without sibilance or harshness. Overall treble is quite resolving, with a nice amount of details and micro details retrieval, this tuning is not harsh at all, giving you a very smooth treble presentation.

The soundstage of Periodic Audio Magnesium is surprisingly open, airy, and feels quite large which makes this pair a strong competitor in its price range. The imaging is precise, and instrument separation is good. The layering is good as well, especially on relaxed tracks. In busy tracks due to turning, the layering might be a little bit less deep, but still very realistic and dynamic. Overall technical performance is also good for the price, but the IEM doesn’t punch much above its class.

Conclusions

In my opinion Periodic Audio Magnesium is a very well turned IEM that has a very fun, engaging, and energetic presentation and sound. I also like a good ergonomic bullet style design, which stands out in a saturated IEM market. In addition, you can wear these IEMs both cable down or over-the-ear style which gives you the flexibility.

When we talk about sound signature, it’s very smooth, warm, and clear. The bass has a lot of energy, while clean upper mid range and some sparkle in treble adds excitement to your music.

The package that you get is also impressive, as this IEM comes with a lot of accessories, ear tips and a very nice metal carrying case which protects your IEMs.

Pros:

  • Thick and very energetic bass
  • Lively and exciting tuning
  • Comfortable fit out of the box
  • Responds well to to EQ
  • Good isolation, especially with foam tips
  • and a lot of accessories

Cons:

  • Mid-bass bleed makes lower mids very warm
  • Treble could use just a little bit of more air and sparkle
